History of Jaisalmer – The Golden City of Rajasthan
Jaisalmer, famously known as the "Golden City," was founded in 1156 AD by Rawal Jaisal, a Rajput ruler belonging to the Bhati clan. Situated deep in the heart of the Thar Desert, Jaisalmer rose to prominence due to its strategic location on the ancient Silk Route, becoming a vital trade center connecting India with Persia, Arabia, Egypt, and beyond.
The city's most iconic structure, the Jaisalmer Fort (Sonar Qila), stands proudly on Trikuta Hill and is one of the largest living forts in the world — still home to thousands of people. Made of yellow sandstone, the fort glows golden at sunset, earning the city its famous nickname.
Throughout history, Jaisalmer faced numerous invasions, especially from the Delhi Sultanate and later the Mughals. Despite this, it preserved its rich Rajputana culture, heritage, and architecture. The city is also known for its intricately carved havelis like Patwon Ki Haveli and Salim Singh Ki Haveli.
Today, Jaisalmer is not just a historical city but a major tourist destination offering desert safaris, cultural festivals, and a glimpse into Rajasthan's royal past.
